Recently I came across three RedHOT WordPress plug-ins that give some major ’luv’ back to commentors, in the form of backlinks. One of these plug-ins is called CommentLuv.
CommentLuv, by The ComLuv Network, follows the address that your visitors put into the “website” field when they comment and looks for a feed of their blog’s entries. If it finds what it’s looking for, it will add a link to your commentors’ latest post below their comments! Rocks, right?
It gets better. If your readers register their blogs at ComLuv.com, the CommentLuv WordPress plug-in will then show them a list of 10 of their most recent posts and allow them to choose which one to link to!
There is one thing that you and your registered blog subscribers need to be aware of if you use this plug-in. You may run into a situation in which you or they receive a message of “Banned for having 3 feed errors.” Don’t worry; it sounds bad, but it’s not.
When I installed the CommentLuv WordPress plug-in and submitted a test comment, it worked perfectly. But today (about a day later), I tested again and received this error message when I went to choose a post to link to. The error gives a web address to go to and get the URL in error unbanned. I went there, submitted my link and received notice that the link I submitted was not in the error table of the database!
So, I paced around a bit (in my head) and eventually submitted a ticket to the plug-in’s support site. —(if you’re wondering whether it has good support, here’s your answer)— I don’t think that 10 minutes went by before I received a response from Mr. Andy Baily.
“if you’re commenting whilst logged on the you need to make sure that your site url is stored in your profile, commentluv uses that value for the url when a user is logged on (because there is no url field for logged on users)“
I was logged on…
Problem solved in under an hour (less than 15 minutes, technically, as I responded to one message about 30+ minutes after he sent it).
So, in short, when you download and install the free CommentLuv WordPress plug-in, you’ll need to make sure that your website, listed in your profile, has a feed (WordPress, Blogger, etc.). You could also post that on your subscription page, as well, to let your blog subscribers know.
Thanks again, Andy! 8)
Update (3/11/2010)
I am adding links to other blogs that have seen and solved different issues than mine. Now, if the fix above does not work for you, you can check the links below to see if you are experiencing a different problem.
Also, be sure to read through the comments to this post, as there are more questions and explanation there.

CommentLuv simply vanished from three of my blogs! POOF! It’s gone. It’s installed, all settings are correct. It works when I post to others blogs, it just doesn’t show on either of my blogs. Any ideas?

Hi Britt,
Have you installed or uninstalled any other plugins just before CommentLuv vanished? If so, deactivate each of the recently added plugins, one by one, to see which one is causing the problem. A search in Google for commentluv disappeared turned up previous issuse with Disqus, Intense Debate and a few others.
Otherwise, try deactivating CommentLuv and then reactivating it. If that doesn’t work, try uninstalling it and then reinstalling it.

I tried that and still nothing. Very frustrating. It just suddenly vanished for no reason that I can see.

Hi Britt,
I just went to your site and checked out a post. CommentLuv showed up fine. The thing is, since it’s a comment-related plug-in, it’s only going to show up where comments are available. I realize that’s stating the obvious, but…
BY DEFAULT:
* Comments do not display on Pages; only on Posts.
* Comments do not display on the home page, even if the home page content is a post.
* Many, if not most, newer blog themes hide comments until they are activated by a reader (i.e. reader clicks on “comments,” “read comments,” leave a comment,” etc.). CommentLuv is hidden with the comments section.
So, your CommentLuv is working, but it is not showing up in the usual places where it is not intended to: Page, Front Page, Category, etc. But it does show if you go to a post’s specific page.
I hope that eases some confusion and frustration.
SOMEWHAT OFF TOPIC:
Another ‘Reward Your Commentors’ plugin that you may like is TwitterLink Comments by Andy Bailey, creator of CommentLuv. TwitterLink Comments allows your readers to include their Twitter IDs to their comments.

CommentLuv is a comment plugin and therefore I would expect it to appear anywhere there is a comment box.Is there any work around?

If CommentLuv (or any comment plugin, for that matter) is not showing up along with your comment box, then it sounds like the code itself is somehow not being displayed.
Are you using custom code around your comment boxes at these three blogs that may be interfering with plugins?
I don’t think that I’ll be able to help you on this. You will have to sign up at ComLuv.com to get support from Andy. AS soon as you log in, you will see the support section at the top-left of your screen.
You can copy and paste this conversation into a new support ticket so that you do not have to retype everything.
I’m sorry I couldn’t help you, Britt.

I was doing some research on how to figure out and fix this “Banned for having 3 feed errors.” Now know to worry about it. Thanks.

Well, if you link to your outsourcing site in your profile settings, CommentLuv will only display this error.
Twitter: GreyStormMedia
Hi, thanks for commenting.
This error is displayed because there is no post feed on the site. Were this a blog, or another feed-enabled website, ComLuv.com would detect the feed and display a list of up to ten previous posts to choose from.

I encountered this message as well “CommentLuv – “Banned for having 3 feed errors”.
Until now I wasn’t able to fix it. I have no idea yet how to fix it. I already tried some techniques but it didn’t work.

Hi, In short, the website that you link to in your profile settings (in your WordPress blog) has to have an RSS feed. So, if you link to your outsourcing site in your profile settings, CommentLuv will only display this error, because that site does not have RSS. You can simply type in your blog’s address as your profile’s website and this will solve the problem, as your WP blog does have a feed.

Thank you Dave for a quick reply. I’ll try to fix that.
Thank you so much.
Phil
I tried registering the outsourcing site, I am not sure if it would fix the problem.
I don’t have a site with RSS feed.
Twitter: GreyStormMedia
Hi Philam, Sorry friend. I feel there’s been a small misunderstanding here.
CommentLuv is a plug-in for the WordPress blog platform. So, if you go to http://wordpress.org/ and download & install the blog on your server, you would then be able to install the CommentLuv plug-in on your blog through your WordPress administration area. Then, when people comment on your blog, they can link their comment to their own blog (or other RSS-enabled website).
At the bottom of many of the comments on this post, you can see, “Thanks!
–>” and then a link, followed by a heart. This is where the commentors’ links are (below their comments).
I’ll e-mail you shortly to either walk you through the process, or do it for you, if you are interested.

Just came across your blog this afternoon. I will be stopping here from time to time for some inspiring post and to interact with the commentators as well.

I had a simular problem not long ago, where the issue ‘magically’ resolved itself. Funny how that happens.
Most times this has to do with the cache being cleared out —the problem is ‘stuck’ in a cached version of your blog but, after closing your browser or manually clearing your browser’s cache, the problem is no longer there.

I tried doing what you said (change but the same error message still shows up. Any idea what’s going wrong?

I am having the same exact problem. I went to the unban page but my url is not in the table.
I don’t know exactly how to foloow your insturuction though:
you’ll need to make sure that your website, listed in your profile, has a feed (WordPress, Blogger, etc.).
I can’t seem to find the profile you are takling about. Do you mend my own WordPress blog or my profile on commentluv. I couldn’t find a profile link anywhere on commentluv.
Can you break it down a bit further for commentluv for Dummies, please?
(I see that commentluv is working fine on other sites – just not on my own blog) see below.
Thanks!

Right Don. The profile in your WordPress blog is what you want to change.
When you log into the administration area, click the dropdown arrow for “Users” and then click “Authors & Users.” Then click on your name (admin).
Look about half way down the page (you may have to scroll down, depending on your screen resolution) and, under the “Contact” heading, you will see “Website” directly under “E-mail.” Type in the address of your blog.

I’m sure that you could use any website that has an RSS feed, but, using my own as an example, I just use this blog’s web address for my profile on the same blog. This way, if I am replying to a comment, I can choose to link to an older post that may not be getting traffic anymore, plus any reader interested in viewing the post that I linked to will not be shifted off to another website.
